SPINDALE (July 14, 2025) -- When Jennifer Fowler enrolled at Isothermal Community College in August 2019, she wasn’t just starting classes—she was reigniting a dream. At 45, she joined the inaugural Social and Human Services program determined to pursue a career she had dreamed of since she was a teenager.
Returning to school decades later presented new challenges—especially with evolving technology—but Jennifer found the support she needed through Isothermal’s tutoring services, writing center, and a deeply invested faculty.
Guided by program director Kimberly Snyder and surrounded by peers and mentors who believed in her, Jennifer thrived. She embraced hands-on learning, built strong community connections, and found her voice through the Peer2Peer mentoring program, which helped grow her confidence and leadership skills. Along the way, she worked in College and Career Readiness programs like ABE and ESL, gaining experience that would prove invaluable.
Jennifer graduated from ICC in 2021 with her associate in Applied Science in Social and Human Services, cheered on by her mentors and peers.
“Seeing Mrs. Snyder cheering us on with her big smile and camera as we walked toward that stage and our finish line meant the world to me and my peers. Priceless,” Jennifer exclaimed.
Jennifer then went on to earn her bachelor and master degrees in Social and Human Services from Lees-McRae College.
Today, Jennifer is a Veteran Services Officer for Rutherford County, providing critical support to local veterans and their families—a role she calls both demanding and deeply rewarding. Her connection to Isothermal continues through her service on the college’s Social and Human Services Advisory Board and her participation in community events.
Jennifer’s journey is a powerful reminder of how education can transform lives at any age—and how Isothermal Community College helps students turn purpose into profession.
The Social and Human Services curriculum prepares students for entry-level positions in institutions and agencies which provide social, community, and behavioral health services. Along with core courses, students take courses, which prepare them for specialization in specific human service areas.
Coursework includes the development of professional knowledge, skills, and values in human services. Opportunities for experiential learning allow students to apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom.
Graduates should qualify for positions in government, private, and nonprofit social and human services agencies. Graduates may choose to transfer and continue their education at a variety of colleges and universities.
