SPINDALE (June 4, 2025) – Joy Thomson, a welding instructor at Isothermal Community College, has been named the recipient of the 2025 Robert Wendell Eaves Distinguished Teaching Award, the college’s highest honor for teaching excellence.

Thomson was presented with the award by Isothermal President Dr. Margaret Annunziata during the college’s Curriculum Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 17.

A proud alumna of Isothermal herself, Thomson has taught at the college for 17 years, bringing more than two decades of industry experience to the classroom. Her students and colleagues describe her as passionate, compassionate, and deeply committed to student success—both academically and personally.

“She’s an amazing teacher,” said one nominator. “She’ll try any way she can to help students understand. She has a happy vibe that makes every class enjoyable.”

Another student shared, “She’s both passionate and compassionate. She meets each student where they are and helps them develop the skills they need—not just to succeed in class, but in life.”

Over the years, Thomson has built a reputation not only for technical excellence, but also for service-driven leadership. Among her many contributions, she led students in a large-scale project that resulted in the construction of more than 100 stoves and heaters for individuals displaced by Hurricane Helene and others living in temporary housing throughout Western North Carolina.

“In her work, she teaches more than welding—she teaches purpose, resilience, and community,” said Dr. Annunziata during the award presentation. “Her approach to teaching and mentoring is a shining example of our college’s mission—improving life through learning.”

In Thomson’s own words: “I love my job. I’ve worked so hard on growing connections to give our students a true shot at securing a job after graduation. I’m beyond thankful I get to share my love and passion for welding with the next generation.”

The Robert Wendell Eaves Distinguished Teaching Award was established in 1982 by the Eaves family to honor the legacy of Dr. Robert Wendell Eaves, a revered educator who championed teaching as a calling of service. Each year, a committee of past recipients selects the winner based on nominations submitted by students, alumni, college personnel, and community members.

Dr. Eaves believed: “A zeal for service is the first requirement of professionalization… Our remuneration comes largely from the joy of seeing people grow strong, useful and intelligent. This is the best life has to offer.”

Also recognized as finalists for this year’s award were Tiffany Cooper and Zachary Freeman, both praised for their excellence in teaching and unwavering commitment to Isothermal’s students.

Past recipients of the Eaves Award include Betsy Cuthbertson, Kimberly Snyder, and Bret Watson, among many others who have left a lasting mark on the college’s academic legacy.
