Nurse Aide I

This 188-hour course is designed to prepare graduates to provide personal care and perform basic nursing skills for the elderly and other adults. Emphasis on aging process including mental, social and physical needs of the elderly, patient's rights, nutrition management, elimination procedures, safe environment, restorative services, personal and special care procedures and activities, human body structure and function and related common disease/disorders, communication and documentation, death and dying, and roles of the nursing assistant and health team members. A skill/competency evaluation is required. The course includes class, laboratory and clinical learning experiences. Upon satisfactory completion of the course and skill/competency evaluation, the graduate is eligible to apply for listing as a Nurse Aide I by the N.C. Division of Facility Services. Please see the information listed below for Nurse Aide I Program prerequisites and co-requisites. CLASS DATES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE. 

Due to the continued COVID-19 crisis, ALL Nurse Aide Level I courses AND Orientation sessions will have a maximum capacity of 10 STUDENTS per class (including Hybrid classes) and sessions.  You must pre-register for the orientation sessions and classes by calling 828-395-1405.  If you need leave a message, include your name, phone number, email address, and the Section Number of the class you wish to sign up for. 

  1. PRE-REQUISITE: All students wishing to enroll in the Nurse Aide Level I program must attend the Mandatory Orientation Session for the class they are interested in registering for.
  2. PRE-REQUISITE: All students wishing to enroll in the Nurse Aide Level I program must successfully complete the required 16-hour Pathways to C.N.A. course, which is typically offered one to two weeks before every Nurse Aide I class begins (see below for Pathways to C.N.A information). In most cases, the cost of the Pathways to C.N.A. course can be fee waived.
  3. PRE-REQUISITE:  All students wishing to enroll in the Nurse Aide Level I program must provide proof of ONE of the following items:  (1) an unofficial college transcript showing a grade of “C” or better in a college level English course; or, (2) a Bronze Level certificate from the Career Readiness Certification exam; or, (3) a passing grade on the Reading CASAS exam administered by the Adult High School department at ICC.
