Eligibility for Career and College Promise

Career and College Promise offers North Carolina high school students a clear path to success in college or in a career. Through a partnership of the Department of Public Instruction, the N.C. Community College System, the University of North Carolina system and many independent colleges and universities, North Carolina is helping eligible high school students to begin earning college credit at a community college campus at no cost to them or their families. The three pathways include:

College Transfer Pathway Eligibility

Designed for students planning to continue their educational career beyond high school to eventually achieve an Associate's or Bachelor's degree at a community college or university.

High school Junior or Senior

You are eligible if you meet either requirement

  • Have a 2.8 unweighted GPA (UGPA)
  • Demonstrate college readiness on an approved assessment

Freshman or Sophomore

You must also meet one of the following requirements

  • Be identified as gifted by a local AIG plan in English/Reading and Math
  • Score in the 92 - 99 percentile on an acceptable aptitude and achievement test for Reading, English, and Math

You must meet all of the following requirements

  • Demonstrate college readiness via assessment
  • Receive recommendation of maturity to enroll from high school principal or equivalent administrator, approval of college chief academic officer and recommendation of AIG coordinator (if applicable)
  • Have consent of parent/guardian
  • Receive academic advising prior to program enrollment

Career & Technical Education

Allows students to begin a certification or diploma program in a particular technical field or career area.

High school Junior or Senior

You are eligible if you meet either requirement

  • Have a 2.8 unweighted GPA (UGPA)
  • Demonstrate college readiness on an approved assessment in English, Reading, and Math

You can also be eligible with a recommendation meeting both of the following requirements

  • Recommendation of high school principal/designee with his/her rationale for recommendation in place of the GPA requirement
  • Recommendation of the college's Chief Academic Officer

Freshman or Sophomore

You must also meet both of the following requirements

  • Recommendation of high school principal with their rationale for recommendation in place of the GPA requirement (assessment scores should be considered)
  • Recommendation of the college's Chief Academic Officer

You must meet either of the following requirements

  • Grade of C or better in Math I, EOC score of 3, 4, or 5 for Math 1, and EOG score of 3, 4, or 5 for 8th grade ELA Assessment
  • Demonstrate readiness on approved assessments in English, Reading, and Math

Cooperative Innovative High Schools

North Carolina's early colleges and other innovative schools are small public high schools, usually located on the campus of a university or community college, where students simultaneously work toward completion of both the high school diploma and an associate's degree, transferable credit or certificate.

To be eligible for enrollment in a College Transfer Pathway, students must demonstrate college readiness in English, reading, and mathematics on an approved test(s). Eligibility may be demonstrated by achieving the required scores on a single test or by combining test scores from any of the approved assessments. For example, a student may combine a 22 on ACT math with a 480 on SAT composite score  for evidenced-based reading and writing to demonstrate college readiness. A Level Math C or higher
