Overview of the Search Process
Upon the news of Dr. Myra Johnson's intent to retire as president of Isothermal Community College in spring of 2013, the Board of Trustees met soon after to discuss the issue.
The board decided to conduct the search itself using a combination of the Board of Trustees Executive Committee and college staff. The services of Campbell Shatley, PLLC -- an Asheville-based law firm that specializes in representing community colleges and public school systems -- will be used to conduct background checks and related screening services. The college employees assisting the board with the search are the administrative assistant to the president and the trustees, the director of Human Resources, and the director of Marketing and Community Relations.
It is intended that the hiring process will maintain the integrity of the board and college while complying with federal and state laws and meeting the goal of selecting the best candidate to lead the college to meet its mission, vision and values.
The position will be advertised in various venues to attract qualified applicants. Interested applicants will apply through the college’s online application tracking system. Initial screening of applicants will be handled by staff and legal counsel. Applicants with complete electronic submissions and who meet qualifications will be forwarded to the Presidential Selection Committee for review.
The Presidential Selection Committee will consist of the Trustee Executive Committee, selected college personnel and several members of the community from the college's service area of Rutherford and Polk counties. The trustees will form that committee by mid-January.
Once formed, the Presidential Selection Committee will do an intense review of the applicants and select the smaller number of finalists to be presented to college employees and the public. Those finalists will be interviewed by the full Board of Trustees.
After those interviews, the board will submit the finalist name for approval to the State Board of Community Colleges. The Isothermal trustees will make an offer contingent on approval by the State Board.
A public announcement of the new president's appointment will be made as soon as possible after the process is complete.
